Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said Tuesday afternoon that efforts are underway to get rid of Prop 47 as he believes it has created more crime in the city than prevention.
“As long as people feel that they can get away with a crime— vandalizing a business, stealing from that business, they’re gonna continue to do it. We need increased accountability,” Dyer said.
Proposition 47 is an effort to ensure that prison spending is focused on serious offenses, by reducing certain petty crimes, such as theft and drug possession, from felonies to misdemeanors and allowing those serving felony sentences for these crimes to be resentenced. The money saved from having fewer people incarcerated would go toward prevention programs in schools and victim services.
